BENAIAH MATHESON
This edition of prints brought together cyanotype and screenprint with Benaiah’s incredible drawing and text designs.
Each print is completely unique and was designed by the artist as an invitation to his works at the Grenada Pavillion of Venice Biennale 2024.
You can read here about Benaiah’s incredible project and the Venice exhibition ‘Town Island’- bringing together community creative engagements in Huddersfield and Carriacou and his own original works in a beautiful installation.
After our initial workshop session, we decided to create screenprint designs directly from Benaiah’s drawings- featuring his original script for the invitation text and his signature.
Designs were exposed as cyanotypes, using a naturally uv-sensitive solution of iron salts to create a beautiful indgo blue, Benaiah selected a hemp paper by G.F.Smith as this tied in with materials from the project and his research.
Two colour layers were then printed over the double-exposed cyanotypes- both front and back, in earthy, but vibrant acrylic ink.
Finally, the invitations were folded in a traditional Turkish Map Fold, creating an almost sculptural structure.
